France – Chambres et table d’hotes, Francoise et Alexis AMARGER

Here you stay in a wing of a farmhouse built from big lumps of granite and are served in the original farm kitchen with an immense stone fireplace down one side. We had vegetable soup followed by the finest roast pork I have ever tasted with homegrown mash, mountain hams and salad. The cheeseboard included two made on the farm and they bake their own bread. All served off beautiful chunky old plates and cutlery. They will post vacuum-packed beef from the farm within the EU.
Malmø – Trio
We went here for Helle’s 40th birthday and had a transcendent meal, served to us by the 3 chefs themselves. Absolute attention to detail, utter seriousness, pure modernity. We would have giggled at it all if the food wasn’t so brilliant. The tempered cod with mushrooms has just set a new bar for a fish course; I doubt I’ll find better. Or fish roe with carrot puree and powdered beef marrow – sounds absurd but in reality amazing.
New Zealand – Guzi’s Fish & Chips
Travelling up the unbelievably beautiful west coast of the South Island in New Zealand? Stop for fish and chips at Guzi’s on the back street of Franz Josef. An authentic chippie yet to succumb to gentrification.
Stockholm – Restaurangen
Had a great meal of 7 courses with a different wine to each. Unfussy but elegant presentation. Good spirited place with clouds printed onto perspex wall panels and a white lacquered unsquare table for us all to get around. Dinner took 4 hours!
the best place to eat…
